OTF Aquarium Farm(formally know as Ong’s Tropical Fish Aquarium & Fresh Flowers). The Company was founded by both Managing Directors, Mr Ong Chin Soon & Mr Ong Soon Her whom both started rearing ornamental fish as a hobby in their backyard (“Kampong”) in the early 1970s. When the activity grew, they give up schooling to pursue their interest in the breeding of ornamental fish on a more intensive basis. OTF’s history can be traced back to the early days of the Company’s pioneer, decreased Mr Ong Chia Kee who was in the pig farming business during the early 1960s, the father of both Managing Directors, Mr.Ong Chin Soon & Mr Ong Soon Her. In the mid 1970s, their pig farm located at Yishun was eradicated due to the Government’s move to stem pollution and free up more land for redevelopment project. At that point in time, Chia Kee’s two sons, Ong Chin Soon & Ong Soon Her joined the family business. They converted the family old pig farm into concrete and earth ponds and started breeding guppies & other ornamental fishes for the local fish exporters. However, in early 1980s, during a heavy thunderstorm, their entire breeding stocks was washed away. Due to this setback, both did not give up hope and they decided set up a Retailing Aquarium Shop (then know as Ong’s Tropical Fish Aquarium & Fresh Flowers ) in Ang Mo Kio. Eventually in 1987, they decided to go back into fish farming and started off the business by leasing a plot of land at Jalan Kayu from the government. By 1993, due to the Punggol 21 project by the government for residential development purpose, they had to relocate to a new site in Pasir Ris which is used for the breeding and culture of ornamental fish such as Arowanas, Japanese Carps and Goldfishes. Then in 1997, they complete the farm with a hatchery, nursery and breeding ponds dedicated to the breeding of Arowanas. For OTF’s pioneering efforts, the Company was able to gain international recognition in the late 2002 and became the one of the few company in the world to be registered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) for the commercial captive breeding of Asian Arowanas. Presently, they are the 6th CITES registered farm (registration number: A-SG-512) to obtain the approval license in Singapore registered with AVA for the breeding and distribution of Dragon Fish (Scleropages formosus). Throughout the years, not only has the farm bred Arowana but also the new species of Red-eye Ablino Giant Gourami. Today, OTF Aquarium Farm is one of the few company in the world involved in the commercial captive breeding of the Asian Arowana and has constantly invest in internal research and development(R & D) activities to improve the quality and uniqueness of the fish that they breed as to ensure that they remain competitive in the ornamental fish industry.
